North Samar launches 1st provincial environment quiz for junior high school

CATARMAN, Northern Samar – The Province of Northern Samar has launched its first provincial environment quiz today for junior high school students for both public and private high school in the province at Ibabao Hall, New Capitol Building, Catarman.
PGENRO Head Camila C. Sarmiento said the quiz aims to foster awareness and appreciation of environment protection, conservation and management, and the science behind common environmental issues and concerns.
Likewise, she said to identify possible areas of intervention to further enhance environment-related courses and curriculum and craft next year’s environmental quiz using lessons learned from this year’s event.
The mechanics of the contest were the following: only one representative from each public and private junior high school was allowed to participate and the representative selected by the school using a process and mechanics that their own respective school head have formulated’ and a written document indicating the name of official school representative signed by the school principal and brought to the venue during the examination day.
The contest covered principle of ecology, solid waste management, clean water and clean air act, climate change and natural resources management on forest, land, and coastal marine.
The winners were Dianna G. Madeja who emerged champion, was from Catarman National High School, 1st runner up was Laila C. Contado of San Isidro Agro-Industrial School, and Neil Rian Modrig O. Eco of Saint Michal Academy as second runner up.
The champion got P5,000 cash prize award plus certificate and plaque of recognition; the first runner up received P3,500 plus certificate and plaque of recognition; and the second runner up got P2,500 cash plus certificate and plaque of recognition and thirteen (13) consolation prize of P500 pesos were given to the other participants who qualified for the first elimination round.
Meanwhile, Governor Jose L. Ong in his invitation letter to all participating school, said that nurturing awareness and love for the environment among youth is one small but, crucial step towards achieving his dream for a clean, green, and prosperous Northern Samar. (ajc/tbc-pia8northsamar)
