Catarman, Northern Samar – The Province of Northern Samar through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) joined the national simultaneous earthquake drill (NSED) this August 16, 2018 with a shake drill in the province’s most populated school, the University of Eastern Philippines located in Catarman.  The College of Nursing and Allied Sciences and College of Engineering served as venue of the drill.

In a memorandum of Governor Jose Ong Jr. dated February 13, 2018, he underscored the value of disaster preparedness as the threat of a high magnitude earthquake hovers, generally referred to as “The Big One”, along areas within the Philippine trench, to include Northern Samar.   The activity is also in compliance to Memorandum No. 17, series of 2018 of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) enjoining PDRRMCs, MDRRMCs, school heads and other heads of agencies to spearhead the conduct of earthquake drill in their areas.

The practice also aimed to test the efficiency of the preparedness, response and recovery plans, systems and policies developed by the province, the agencies involved and the school, the coordination and communication mechanism during response operations, as well as the command and control mechanism of DRRMCs in emergency operations.
