CATARMAN, Northern Samar — Northern Samar HIV/AIDS treatment hub opens through the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the HIV AIDS Core Team (HACT) and the Department of Health (DOH) at the Northern Samar Provincial Hospital Compound in Catarman.
With the new health service, HACT Co-Chair Dr. Ezekiel Valera calls on Nortehanons to submit for check-up.
“One of the most important thing to prevent transmission is to know your status through free HIV testing and counseling, “ said Dr. Valera.
Dr. Valera encourages individuals particularly those having multiple sexual partners not to be afraid to know their status as he assured confidentiality of the result and treatment.
He explained that HIV is a controllable disease as long as it is detected early and has not yet done major damage to organs like the liver, kidneys, and the brain and one can live up to more than 80 years old as long as he undergoes treatment religiously.
Further he said that HIV is transmitted only in certain body fluids from a person infected with HIV through blood, semen, pre seminal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk mainly by having sex or sharing injection drug equipment, such as needles, with someone who has HIV.
The team urges individuals to protect themselves from HIV infection and its effects by following the principles of ABCDE which means A for abstinence, B- being faithful; C-correct and consistent use of condoms; D- do not share needles/ do not inject drugs; E-early detection/education on HIV, he concluded.
