As a province frequented by tropical storms and typhoons, Northern Samar understands the dire situation in which the communities and the people heavily-affected by the onslaught of Super Typhoon Odette are currently in. Majority of the more than 200 casualties reported by the Philippine National Police as of this morning were from Surigao del Norte, the first area where Odette made landfall, and the provinces of Bohol and Cebu in Central Visayas.
For Eastern Visayas, Southern Leyte incurred the most damage while also reporting several casualties. As of 6PM of December 19, 2021, there are towns which are running out of food; the national highway and roads to rural villages were blocked; and there was no power, internet, and phone connectivity.
This is why the Provincial Government of Northern Samar, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, immediately sent relief augmentation to the victims of Typhoon Odette in the province of Southern Leyte. Yesterday, 500 sacks of rice, 100 boxes sardines, 100 boxes viena sausage, 50 boxes coffee, 50 boxes cereal drinks and 120 boxes bottled water (1 liter) were delivered to City Government of Maasin.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte also received 500 sacks of rice, 200 boxes sardines, 200 boxes viena sausage, 100 boxes cereal milk drinks, 100 boxes coffee and 125 boxes bottled water (1 liter). Christy Trucking/Tri Star and the 803rd Brigade of the Philippine Army provided logistical support in addition to the 4 trucks of the provincial government.
This relief operation is among the directives of Governor Edwin C. Ongchuan who has also provided relief augmentations to the neighboring provinces of Albay and Catanduanes when both were hit by Super Typhoon Rolly back in November 2020. He hopes that others, whether in government or the private sector, will keep the Bayanihan Spirit alive and also help the victims of ST Odette in their own little ways by getting involved in legitimate donation drives.
“We have to pay it forward. For so many times, whenever we are struck by disasters, Northern Samar has been the recipient of various relief operations. When helping other provinces or LGUs, there are no richer or poorer provinces or cities. There are only heavily impacted fellow Filipinos who are in dire need of assistance for their immediate recovery,” Governor Ongchuan said.
