The Rayhak Leni-Kiko People’s Rally in Northern Samar, held in the afternoon until evening of March 28, 2022, draws thousands of crowd like no other gathering in the history of the province.
The Northern Samar Police Provincial Office Chief of Operations, P/LtCol Joseph Quelitano estimated the crowd at about 73,000, coming from the different towns of the province. They trooped to the UEP Grandstand since early afternoon, despite heavy downpour. The crowd kept coming in until evening which caused hours of heavy traffic along Catarman-UEP route. The PNP observed some of the attendees leaving early evening, while others kept arriving until the Vice President and her team made it to the province at past 7PM. Apart from the 2.5-hectare UEP Grandstand Oval, the side lanes as well as nearby streets were also filled with groups in pink, which added to the PNP’s count. The number of those stuck in traffic were also factored in the total count.
Governor Edwin Ongchuan, Congressman Paul Daza and other local officials welcomed Vice President Leni Robredo and her team, amidst cheers by VP’s campaign volunteers and supporters in the province.
The event peaked when Governor Ongchuan introduced the Vice President before the huge crowd, and endorsed her presidential bid, joined by Congressman Daza, municipal mayors and other local officials in the province.
Vice President Leni Robredo traveled to Catarman by land, straight from her campaign sortie in Catbalogan City, with Senator Kiko Pangilinan, Chel Diokno, Alex Lacson, Teddy Baguilat, Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone and former Calbayog City Congressman Mel Sarmiento. Senator Dick Gordon, also joined the Rally, arriving ahead of the VP team.
